If the name Whey Jennings sounds familiar, it should. Whey is the grandson of Waylon Jennings. He stopped into Radio Memphis in The Morning with Ric Chetter to talk about an appearance in Memphis. But they also talked about songwriting, touring, influences and his famous grandfather. Currently, Whey is on the road with former members of David Allen Coe's band now known as Cold Moses. Before you think of Whey as nothing more than a country artist, you would be mistaken. Although they do play country, they also play some of Waylon Jennings music as well as blues and rock & roll. Nashville duo Friendship Commanders dropped into Radio Memphis in The Morning with Ric Chetter to hype up an appearance in midtown. They brought some music from their latest collection, Bill. This band is a socially conscious outfit who hit on heavy rock and punk with some very memorable lyrics and licks. So how does a band like this get a way with not having a bass player? Brenda Taylor returns to the Radio Memphis studios for an appearance on The Booze & Blues. This time backed by the world famous Radio Memphis House Band made up of Brad Webb, David Dunn, Stephen Seligman and Willie Hall. Right before her trip back to her native Chicago, she wanted to bring by some of her new music and tell some more stories about life with her father, Eddie Taylor and all the other influential blues artists she grew up with. New Memphis based band Mama Honey came to Radio Memphis for a special show. With a new collection of songs, this band has been getting a lot of buzz around the area. Mama Honey draws from influences like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Hill Country blues. Putting this band in any box. They have been referred to as punk blues, roots doom rock and other unique comparisons. One thing is for sure, this is something you have never heard before. They sat down with Ric on a Saturday night for a performance and conversation about where their music comes from, how the band got together and what it is that makes them so different. Listen now.

Los Angeles blues singer Brigitte Purdy stopped into the Radio Memphis studios for a repeat visit while she was in town for the Blues Music Awards. She talked with Ric about the BMA's, new music, the name of her new CD coming out this fall and to sing a bit for the audience. Also in this conversation, they talked about the possibility of Brigitte moving to Memphis to get closer to the scene as many other new additions to the city have done. With all of that, Brigitte talked about her songwriting style and what it takes to craft a good tune worthy of the stage and the recording studio. Listen now.

 

Recent new Memphian (from Los Angeles), Doug MacLeod made an appearance at Radio Memphis during the Booze & Blues show. David is a remarkable player whose talents come from a wide array of musicians he has encountered over the years. The turning point for Doug came with a stint in the U.S. Navy. He tells that story in this On Demand show taken straight from the air. Along the way, you will hear some of his music, his passion for the National guitar he plays and what it takes (for him) to be one of the most remarkable finger pickers playing today. Listen now.

In one of the more remarkable performances ever captured on the air at Radio Memphis, comes Robert Kimbrough, Sr. This man comes from the legacy of Junior Kimbrough and carrying on of the tradition that is Cotton Patch Soul & Blues. In this episode of The Booze & Blues, Robert takes on some of his father's music as well as his own. Along the way, you will hear some of the stories around the Kimbrough family and the other families of North Mississippi. You'll also learn the difference between Hill Country Blues, Delta Blues and Cotton Patch Soul Blues.

Born in Moscow, Russia Ada Pasternak​ came to the U.S. with her family when she was six years old.  With musician parents, her childhood was steeped in classical music as she developed into a virtuoso violinist, winning competitions as a soloist and earning standing ovations from audiences of 2,000+.  Her life and career were dramatically altered when severe tendinitis and overuse made playing the instrument impossible.  For two years, she lived as a normal teenager, not knowing if music would ever be a part of her life again.  She discovered Berklee College of Music, and at the last possible moment submitted an application.  As she slowly picked up the violin and prepared one of her favorite pieces to perform at the audition, it was as if she had never stopped playing.  After her father drove her to Boston and accompanied her on piano, to her amazement she was awarded the school’s highest honor; A Presidential Scholarship (a full ride) 

 

At Berklee, Ada was intrigued by the diversity of students and styles of music. “It was so fascinating to see all of these young, curious musicians from all over the world coming together to make music and learn,” she relates.  Through playing with such an eclectic group of musicians, Ada absorbed a variety of genres such as Pop, Jazz, Bluegrass, and even joined a Mariachi band." ~ www.adasmusic.com

Detroit country/rock girl Paulina Jayne called in to Radio Memphis Around the World with Dianna while she was out on the road to check in and talk about some events going on, including the Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) hands-on free clinic that was happening in Memphis in conjunction with the Memphis Police Department.    

 

Ford DSFL is a national safety initiative created by the Ford Motor Company, The Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and a panel of safety experts to help young drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60% of vehicle crashes including hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed management, and space management. The ride-and-drives provide an opportunity for teens to get behind the wheel with a professional instructor at their side and go through exercises that address the four primary skills for Ford DSFL.

 

For those who may not have the chance to attend one of the hands-on clinics happening across the country can even visit the Ford DSFL website, which includes four study modules and a quiz, car care videos, several interactive games, and an enhanced curriculum noting the importance of eco-driving to personal safety and the environment.  An Electronic Educator packet is even made available and can be used by students and parents at home, as well as educators in the classroom and community settings.  This free packet includes an in-depth video concentrating on each of our four driving skills, a letter for parents, a letter for educators, a leader's guide and brochures.
