RMOD - Marshall Charloff - Around the World

Not only is Marshall Charloff a singer and songwriter, he is a celebrated producer and recording artist. Having worked with and recorded for acts such as Little Anthony (Little Anthony and the Imperials) and multi-platinum-selling-grammy- award-winning band, The Commodores, Marshall’s writing and producing skills paved the way for the creation of Marshmallow Fields: a 1990s production team consisting of Marshall working with Steven “Funkytown” Greenberg (musician/record producer/production/ owner of October Records) and John Fields (musician/record producer/production/The Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus/Switchfoot/Goo Goo Dolls/Pink/Backstreet Boys/ etc.). Marshall has also been inducted in to the “Mid America Music Hall Of Fame” as a member of the Minneapolis band, Westside.

 

Over the course of time, Marshall has teamed up with the famous jazz man Marcus Anderson (New Power Generation/3rd Eye) to perform with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and he has recorded with Prince on the album “94 East”. Marshall has even teamed up with “Doctor Fink” from “Prince and the Revolution”, along with Pepe Willie from the band 94 East, to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame events. Currently, Marshall fronts The Purple Xperience, a band cited as one of the greatest tribute bands to Prince and performs to a dedicated audience backed by world-class symphonies in most major cities worldwide.

 

“What if” we told you that in the middle of this crazy schedule that he has also put out his own music? Dianna caught up with Marshall Charloff this past Saturday (March 9th) during Radio Memphis Around the World before he heads out for a European tour this week to talk about his experiences as a writer and a producer? Marshall even discusses his take on where the music industry is today and shares some of his own original tracks, including a previously unreleased collaboration with one of Prince's family members.

RMOD - Robert Gordon - Booze & Blues

Acclaimed writer, documentarian and (as much as he won't admit) historian returns to the Radio Memphis studios to talk about his latest work. Memphis Rent Party. One of the very few books out there with a sound track. There is a real reason for this sound track. He talks Memphis music in such a special way, you will want to hear what he is writing about. In this edition of The Booze & Blues, Ric enlists the help of Natalie Gabel to sort out the myriad stories surrounding the historic music scene in this fantastic book. 

Also, there is a bit of recall of the moments Robert had with Gore Vidal in the making of Best of Enemies.

RMOD - Fellow Citizens - Booze & Blues

Garry Burnside has a new band. These guys are the real deal. On 10 February they came to Radio Memphis for an episode of the Booze & Blues to lay out their talents and man, did they deliver. If you missed the original broadcast, here it is. Quatavius Mason and Tate Moore (The Kudzu Kings) came and sat in the pocket for this electrifying show. Can you hear the Burnside Style in this?

RMOD - Charlotte Taylor with Memphis Deep - Booze & Blues

Little Rock, Arkansas singer Charlotte Taylor finally came to the Radio Memphis studios for a great visit during the Booze & Blues show. Charlotte is a powerhouse of a singer as well as quite the entertainer. Backing her in the studio that night was Memphis Deep. This trio is quite the machine. Bob Kelsey (guitar), David Dunn (bass) and Leroy Clay (drums). They ripped through a few standards and some original material.

RMOD - Daddy Mack Blues Band - February 2019

Daddy Mack is one of those "old school" cats. He has been around a long time. In the traditional sense of the blues, he's a man who works a blue collar job as a mechanic and finds the time to sit down with his guitar ( and friends) to woodshed the blues. In this appearance which happened on February 17, he brought his guitar and his friends down for a live broadcast on the Booze & Blues show. Mack is smooth and unassuming. Modest yet forceful. His style evokes old North Mississippi stomp and delta vibes. His youthful sound reaches into the gut of the Hill Country and pulls out the "today" sound you want.

In our visit he can be a bit bashful yet when his guitar turns loose, all of hell comes out and the absolute joy of the blues comes through. Here it is, his performance as raw is it should be right here.

 

RMOD - Booze and Blues - David Evans

Grammy award winning David Evans came to the Blues & Blues to talk about the history of the blues. As a professor of the genre and player of the blues, Dr. David (as he may be known) can tell you a thing or two about the blues. He is a tremendous player and a wonderful story teller. It comes with the territory. Here is his appearance on the show on SuperBowl Sunday. As it turns out, the game didn't have much of an impact on the show and Dr. Evans delivered in his great style. Plus, we all learned something as it happens every time he comes around.

Prepare yourselves for some live music and stories from the past and what we can look forward to as the blues is taken up by the up and coming youth.

 

RMOD - Booze & Blues - Brigitte Purdy and The Bush League

On January 27, 2019, Brigitte Purdy came into the Radio Memphis studios for a conversation and performance during a live broadcast of The Booze & Blues. This blues singer from Los Angeles has deep roots in the blues and his heavily influenced by the Midsouth music scene. So much so, she will be making a return appearance in our studios in May as she attend the Blues Music Awards. During this broadcast, she performed to a few backing tracks to give you a good idea of what she sounds like live. She has a new single out called Blues Collar Woman available where sold.

Also in this show, The Bush League from Richmond, Virginia performed live with a great conversation and some hot blues sounds from their current CD, James River. These guys have the North Mississippi sound right on down to their Virgina roots. It's all here and commercial free. Enjoy.

 

RMOD - Paulina Jayne (February 2019) - Around the World

Detroit's country/rock/pop girl Paulina Jayne just dropped her latest track "Make the Moves" and calls in to Radio Memphis Around the World this past Saturday (Feb. 23rd) to catch up with D to talk about her new music that's coming, working with engineer Mills Logan (Toby Keith, Luke Bryan, Taylor Swift, Travis Tritt, Sammy Hagar, Lonestar, Sister Hazel, Rascal Flatts, Leann Rimes and more) and about some of her plans that she has in store for her fans this year.

RMOD - Casey McPherson - Around the World

".....McPherson would perform all over the world with the group and also as a solo artist on the Cruise to the Edge, feeling welcomed within the prog audience. It was during this period that he had an idea to do something more introspective, something that invited his fans into his world, his mind and his emotions. This is where the Cas.E Session were born. The Cas.E Sessions explores creating songs around a relevant topic or experience and documents the whole process. Every month, the members of the Cas.e Sessions get a new song, a short documentary around the song, and an online live show, which has allowed McPherson to make a record completely independent, fully funded by the members. RMOD - Music Industry Aircheck - Robert Scovill part 2

While spinning some of the coolest indie music from ALL OVER the planet, D also gets to have some interesting conversations about the music industry with fantastic people from all sides of the business. After getting "airchecked" herself by her program director for quality, a lightbulb went off. Why not aircheck the industry?

 

In  this episode, D continues her chat with award-winning, Robert Scovill to get his take on the industry coming up for the sound side of the business. Robert is a 35+ year veteran of professional concert sound and recording and has mixed over 3500 events in his career, having been enlisted by acts including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers,  Matchbox Twenty, Jackson Browne, Rush, Def Leppard, Prince and many others.  Scovill’s body of live sound and recording work has earned him well-deserved industry accolades including 6 TEC Awards for technical and creative achievement in sound reinforcement. Robert is a 4 time nominee, two time winner of the PLSN Parnelli Award for live sound engineer of the year and has been a multi-year nominee for Mobile Production’s “Top Dog” Award along with being an inaugural nominee for the highly coveted Pensado Award for live sound excellence.
